1/100 Overflag

It's been a really, really long time since I built a no-grade kit. The old no-grade 1/144 scale Gundam Wing kits of the late 90s and early 2000s left a long standing bad taste in my mouth. But, I heard a lot of positive things about this model so I decided to give this kit a chance. I'm happy that I did.

The NG Overflag is a straight forward build. It has no real inner frame, and it can transform into the mobile armor mode from the show. There is some reliance on decals to make up for colors that were not molded in plastic.

Suit Lore:

The Overflag is a heavily modified ace unit base on the Union's Flag mobile suit. It's lighter and faster  but also more risky to pilot than the basic version. The Overflags were utilized by Union's Overflag unit lead by the Union  ace pilot Graham Aker to counter Celestial Being Gundams.

The unit I built is supposed to represent Graham's personal unit. It features a blue cover to the linear rifle and a left handed configuration to match the pilot's preferences.

Kit Talk:

This was a tough kit to finish. It was nearly sold twice on r/gunpla's commerce thread before I started painting. I had a very tough time trying to decide if I wanted to paint a kit that was almost entirely black. Eventually however, I pushed through and completed the build.

I fused the seams on the fore arms, shoulders, wing connectors, and head. I took several short cuts on this kit, mostly out of laziness and several seams remain that I opted not to complete.

The Overflag was painted with mr.color GX black for the main body, but a mix of black and white was used in some areas. I  hand painted enamels for the small grey recess on the model and I painted to mono eye above the visor by hand as well.

The decals from this kit come from a variety of sources including the MG GNX and Sinanju deacal sheets among others.

If you like my work and would like to help me out consider purchasing this and other kits from Amazon using this link or others featured on my site. Every purchase helps me out considerably and it doesn't cost you a dime!

Photos:

There are some color discrepancies as the photos were taken at different times of the day, and I forgot to re-balance the camera's color balance every-time I came back.

360:

Almost immediately the Flag's design stands out from a "normal" Gundam design. The limbs are long and thin, and the wings of the waist and backpack are very prominent. When standing next to the MG Exia, the Overflag makes the Exia appear much more beefy. I would normally consider the Exia to be thinner and more athletic than a "normal" Gundam like the RX 78 or [G]

Unlike most mobile suits the Overflag holds it's weapon in the left hand, this is due to the pilot being left handed!

The devise on the right arm acts as a short of shield, the bar can rotate to knock attacks out of the way or outright absorb them.

Action Poses:

 Overflag: Give me your arm!

Exia: Dude. Get off.

Transformed

As expected this model is able to accurately recreate the transformation seen in the show.

The design doesn't look aerodynamic, but it's also not the worst transformation I have seen either.

It turns out that I didn't think the decal placement out very well, two decals are fitted direct onto a piece the rifle sits on during the transformation. Unfortunately this is the result.

These two designs are from completely different series, but they have some neat similarities. They're both flight types, they both have visor styled heads and they both fight against and then alongside their series' protagonists.

Also note the red beam saber. This kit comes with two unpainted clear beam sabers, I painted one with clear blue to represent the stock plasma blade, and the other red to represent the beam saber Graham takes from the Throne Eins.
